ENVIRONMENTALISTS SUPPORT SHAYS
Two conservation groups recognize Shays’ strong environmental voting record
Norwalk, CT – October 1, 2008 – Congressman Christopher Shays (CT-4), recognized as an environmentalist by the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters, has received two more endorsements in his bid for re-election to Congress. Ocean Champions and Republicans for Environmental Protection have both issued statements supporting Shays for his record on environmental issues.
“Christopher is honored to receive the support of these organizations,” said Michael Sohn, Shays’ campaign manager. “He believes preserving and protecting our environment is one of the most important jobs he has as a member of Congress.”
Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP), a national organization of Republican voters, recognized Shays for his energy policy, his efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and his strong opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In 2007, REP named Shays one of the three “greenest Republicans in Congress.”
“Throughout his 21 years in Congress, Christopher Shays has stood out as an environmental champion of the highest rank,” said REP President Martha Marks. “On a broad array of issues – energy, climate change, clean air and water, forests, wilderness – Congressman Shays has been a strong leader who sets the highest standards for environmental stewardship.”
Ocean Champions, a national organization focused on ocean conservation, endorsed Shays as a champion for the oceans in the U.S. House. As co-chairman of the Long Island Sound Caucus, Shays has helped secure federal funding to clean and protect this vital commercial and recreational resource.
“Based on your record and our experience working with you, we have every confidence that you will continue to be a leader who will respond to this challenge, and continue to be a champion for the oceans in the U.S. House,” said Ocean Champions President David Wilmot.
Shays joined Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) to introduce the Energy For Our Future Act, which repeals excessive tax breaks given to oil companies, increases fuel economy standards, and provides incentives to make renewable energy more affordable and widely available. The bill has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club.
