News Release

NORWALK, CT - The League of Conservation Voters, which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, today announced the endorsement of Christopher Shays in his re-election bid to represent Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District.  Shays earned a 100% rating on the LCV Scorecard in 2007.*  His lifetime LCV score of 92% ranks him as the #1 Republican in Congress.

"Throughout his career, Congressman Shays has demonstrated a consistently strong commitment to protecting and preserving Connecticut’s, and the nation’s, environment," LCV President Gene Karpinski said. "This great environmental champion leads his colleagues in both the Republican Party and the House of Representatives to meaningful environmental protection."

“LCV sets the standard for environmental policy, and I am honored to have earned this endorsement,” Congressman Shays said.  “Together, we have made great strides to improve the air we breathe and the water we drink.  Together, we will fight global warming and preserve Connecticut’s natural treasures for our children to enjoy.”

Last month, Congressman Shays reintroduced the Energy for Our Future Act with Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), which would set high fuel efficiency standards to save consumers money at the pump, increased funding for renewable energy sources and cut hand outs to oil companies.   As an original sponsor of a bill to increase energy efficiency, Shays has worked to reduce energy costs for consumers.  As a cosponsor of the Safe Climate Act of 2007, he has been central to bipartisan efforts to minimize the effects of global warming.

Shays has fought for Connecticut’s health; introducing the Clean Water Protection Act, cosponsoring the Clean Smokestacks Act, and leading efforts to clean up and protect Long Island Sound.

"Rep. Shays recognizes the threat of global warming and the incredible economic potential of clean energy and green jobs,”  Karpinski added. “He has been a leader in introducing and cosponsoring important legislation to reduce global warming pollution.  With important global warming bills in the House and Senate and with time for America to act running out, it is important that we return this important leader to Congress.”

*The non-partisan LCV Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate Members of Congress on conservation and clean energy issues. Based on key conservation votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record.  For more information, visit www.lcv.org/scorecard.
