Washington (WTNH) – Several GOP members of the House of Representatives held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to talk about the protest by House Republicans over the lack of movement on the energy bill. Among the half-dozen or so lawmakers going up to the microphone was Connecticut’s only GOP member of Congress, Rep. Christopher Shays.
Says, who said he was the only congressman from New England to vote against adjourning the House for its five week summer break, talked in part about the high cost of fuel and heating oil in Connecticut.
“In my state people are paying, have been paying and are close to paying, four dollars and fifty cents for regular gasoline, that heating fuel is over five dollars a gallon, and imagine what’s going to happen when people fill up the tank of 275 gallons and their bill is going to be over a thousand dollars. That does not need to happen.”
Several Republicans have stayed in Washington in protest of Congress leaving without passing energy legislation. They want Speaker Nancy Pelosi to bring the House back into session to work on a national energy policy.
